Congratulations, I've got the game for you! "Wadanohara and the Great Blue Sea" is another one of those deceptive indie RPGs that starts off cute before going full-blown gore and nightmare fuel, but the romance is always at the heart of the story. This mix is all about Wadanohara and Samekichi from beginning to end. :D Content warning for canon-typical mentions of the darker themes in the game, namely of implied rape, trauma, and healing from said trauma.

It felt fitting to have a tragic Spanish sea ballad for those two. The jealous sea represents Samekichi's brother Sal and the impact he has on their lives.

What does Samekichi have against Wadanohara anyway? And what's this about betrayal? This is a mystery the player has to solve.

Samekichi was Wadanohara's first familiar, and the most loyal to boot.

No matter the distance, I'm holding your hand
Samekichi and Wadanohara do little favors for each other and end up hanging out together more and more. It gets to the point Samekichi develops a crush on Wadanohara and gives her an ocarina one fateful day.

Now I've been sitting on this abandoned beach for years
Waiting for the salty water to cover up my ears
But every time the tide come in to take me home
I get scared, and I'm sitting here alone
Dreaming of the dolphin song

My feet are buried in the sand and there's a breeze

And the waves are just a frothier version of the skies
Nonetheless, Wadanohara doesn't yet recognize she loves him romantically as well as a friend. Even after the "betrayal," she bears no grudge; she only wants to know why he's acting the way he does.

There's a lurker making rounds
Keeping track and keeping tabs, on you

In this place, it's strange to say
You're the only angel I ever gave away
It's all Sal's fault. :P Sal placed a curse on Wadanohara that if she ever regains her memories, she will lose her sanity and Become Evil. And most of her memories involve Samekichi, oops.

The thing with wiping or suppressing memories is they're bound to come back eventually. Not to mention Wadanohara has a sea to protect from the Tosatsu Kingdom, whom it turns out Sal had manipulated.

BLUE SEA ENDING. Wadanohara has a horrible habit of being a Stepford Smiler while Samekichi hides his hurt beneath a grumpy shell, and both feel massive guilt for not being strong enough to save the people they love. After Wadanohara sacrifices herself to become the new Cast Pearl (and who knows how long that protection will last), Samekichi considers himself a useless wreck now that the person who gave his life meaning is gone.

Could be BLUE SEA ENDING, but it works as a general song for Wadanohara herself. Wadanohara contemplates her life and what people—including her late father—expect from her, and the fateful decisions she makes for each ending.

TRUE ENDING songs from here on out. Everything is finally cleared up between Wadanohara and Samekichi, and Samekichi vows to get the sword back from Sal in the Red Sea and come home. In a way, Wadanohara will be his muse and Beatrice that keeps him from succumbing to hell.

Not once does Samekichi ever lose his faith in Wadanohara, no matter how much the going gets rough.

And the same applies to Wadanohara for Samekichi. In fact, the entire story she tells you—along with endings of What Could Have Been—is her way of healing from an aching past.
