Let's say this started off as a 15-minute-ficlet for [livejournal.com profile] bluewolf487, but then my mind wandered as I typed, and... now I know why 15-Minute-Ficlet means 15-Minute-Ficlet. XDD Yep, my mind wandered... and now, I probably written the first fanfic I've finished in one day. XDDD Which is why it'll seem funky reading. But hey, here you've got it! A fic longer than 700 words by yours truly. ;D

Title: Murky Tarnishes
Author: Jigglypuff in Blue Ribbons
Fandom: Mario
Genre: General/Humor
Rating: G
Warnings: None
Pairings: Implied Toad/Toadette
Finished: Yes

Toad sighed as he polished the silverware, he was rather bored.

Grime, grime, and more grime. Plenty of grime around to make him miserable... and bored. He thought of the million things he could be doing right now—tennis, golf, Mario Party—anything but the dreariness of dish water.

"Hey Toad!"

He recognized the chirpy voice long before Toadette had skipped into the room.

"I was wondering..." the pig-tailed wonder started. "Since you're working so hard, I thought I'd take one of your dishes and cook you something..."
"Oh really?" the mushroom retainer's eye perked up—he was rather hungry. "Why, that's really kind of you! I didn't know you could cook."

"Would you like a potato? I can whip those up really easily!"
"Oh sure, I'd like that."
"Already then! I'll even wash your dish when you're done!"

And soon enough, Toadette was the one with the silverware, or rather, knife, while she carved away the inedible parts of the 'tater and set it in a nearby microwave.

~

The rest of the hours went peacefully, and despite the tediousness of it all, Toad certainly felt a great deal happier. It wasn't until recently Toadette had met Mario and his friends, joining them in special activities such as the Grand Double Dash, where she and himself have taken the roads and the bronze cup with them. Slippery slides, rainbow slopes, nothing could stop them.

REEEEP! REEEEP! REEEEP! REEEEP!

Shaken out of his thoughts and nearly dropping the knives back into sink, (or worse, his toe) the mushroom retainer froze with a contorted facial expression while a siren even a cat would cringe under slashes its way across the chalkboard—Princess Peach's castle. He sniffed the air and his nose recoiled, his eyes squinting slightly inside a mist-filled kitchen...

A frantic mushroom girl bounded inside the room, a puzzled, almost frightened expression on her face. Her eyes immediately shifted toward the microwave—with a run so swift, her finger punched the "On/Off" key, and opened the door with horror.

A charcoal of a potato awaited, complete with ash and cracked dish.

While they worked to save the kitchen, Toadette's eyes never left the open microwave while Toad quickly reached the ceiling fan, it flinging madly like his footsteps.

~

"Toad... I'm so sorry about this..."
"You said you could, didn't you? It was probably a mistake..."
"No." Toadette shook her head regretfully. "I... I was just taking lessons from Tays. T, and... I thought I could handle a potato after making a few myself..."
The mushroom girl fought desperately not to cry, and while her face was already red and stained with several tears, her stern look of determination was not to be broken.
"Let me do the rest of the dishes!" she announced, her voice weak, yet vigorous. "You deserve a reward for all your hard work! I'll take care of the broken dish too...!"

She rushed to the sink, ready to make up for her wrong. She shuddered looking at the sludgy-filled water and the scum-crusted dishes—touching the soaked dishcloth was like clutching leeches.

"Toadette, wait! You don't have to do that!" Toad cried. "I'm not mad at you or anything... it's no big deal, it's only a potato..."

"It was for you, though..." Toadette replied, her attention still focused on the dishes. "And honestly, I'm usually so much better than this."

"Really, it's nothing to be upset over," Toad was standing next to her then. "At least you could bake something edible... at least you didn't poison your cereal by pouring out-of-date milk into it. And I did that... two years ago."

"Oh my gosh!" Toadette giggled. "I feel sorry for you, then!"

"Anything else you're learning to make? I bet I can't." the mushroom retainer rubbed the back of his head and smiled.

"Oh sure! I can make cookies!" Toadette giggled. "I hope we learn to make cake soon, too. There's a good chance on that!"

"Well, let me take care of the dishes, okay?" he smiled. "Maybe we can do something special sometime... say we race again? We can try one of these new vehicles that the Princess recently bought."

"Aw, sure!" Her mood was very much uplifted by now. "I'd love to race... but right now, I wanna finish the dishes. With you!"

Toad nodded--there was no stopping her now. But that was okay—two made even the dishes seem a thing of interest.

Scrubbity, scrub scrub, Scrubbity, scrub scrub...

Yes, this actually happened to me recently. XD But really, when I bake potatoes, that was the first time it happened, really! XDD Ahh... I hate cooking. And I think I made Toadette sound too much like me when I got upset. XD Oh well... *sigh* Man, I could do a million things with this meme.
