A Cloud's Silver Lining

Ninten took a deep breath as he crossed the woods out back. The average citizen may find it difficult to tell, but for Ninten, the air had been a lot cleaner in Merrysville lately. Asthma complications made it difficult seeing his friend, but with less cars and Loid moving further into the wood, it had been a lot easier to navigate. It was cloudy, but it didn’t worry Ninten… the weather was still nice.

Loid was certainly not expecting anyone, alone most of the time, with the exception of his high school classes. Even then he was alone... he was used to it. The days of constantly being around his only friends had passed long ago, but he didn't really mind--at least he had them. He glanced up from some sheets of paper he was sketching on to look at a picture of the four of them, holding hands and acting silly for the camera. He looked a little embarrassed, holding Ninten's hand and reaching up to hold Teddy's... with a little sigh and a small smile, he looked back down to the diagram he'd been working on.

“Loid? Loiiiiiiid!? Hey, are you there?" Odd, he didn't seem to be at his usual spot today. He glanced right, finding his friend strewn about with papers on the floor. "Oh, there you are! I was worried you went into hiding." He smiled.

The boy startled at Ninten's voice, hands scrambling for the picture that he'd set atop one of his books. His heart beating rapidly from the scare, he stuffed it into his bag, not even sure why he thought it would embarrass him for Ninten to see it. Maybe it was just that his voice had surprised him that much. "N-Ninten..!" He turned, looking up with wide grey-plum eyes. His mouth fell open a little, eyes nervously scanning the mess around him. "Aaa, no, I mean.. no one's around, so.."

“Hey, it's okay." He hadn't changed one bit. "I just wanted to see you, that's all." He bent on one knee, inspecting the diagram Loid was working on. "Watcha doin'? Looks complicated."

The prodigy’s eyes scanned the paper, unable to shake off the strangely warm feeling that pooled in his stomach with Ninten so interested in what he was doing. Why did he always have to react like this? "Uh.. it's just some brainstorming. For an invention. I'm.. not that far along with it." He was blushing slightly, trying to keep a straight face as the words 'I just wanted to see you' clouded his thoughts.

"Ahh..." Loid had to have finished his homework already, didn't he? "I don't understand this stuff, heh... you're a lot smarter than me." This made the boy grin for some reason--he always did feel like a fool. But around his friends they didn't mind. Especially not Loid.

His friend glanced with a softly worried expression back over his shoulder. "No! No I'm not." Maybe he was, with stuff like this, but... Ninten was smart. Ninten was strong! He turned back. "This isn't homework... it's just something stupid." He still had some confidence issues.

Ninten puts his hands over Loid's, grinning as he does. A rosy blush adorns his cheeks, and he lets his fingers stroke a little. Gosh, he was adorable! When he's nervous like that, he thought quickly. Even that didn't come out right... oh well! "You could use a break!"

Loid's eyes widened, his expression close to horrified in his surprise, insides churning from the touch. An inaudible breath escapes his lips and his blush darkens, eyes darting anywhere but to Ninten's.

"I--.. I don't need.. one." It was so hard to think.. with those fingers over his.
“Please rest." Ninten lowered his head and sighed. "It's been so long, and... I'm sorry. I hope you didn't think I forgotten you or anything."
"... N-no. Never.."

Oh no, why was he acting like this all of a sudden? It was only making the feelings worse.. Ninten would never do something like that! But... but, maybe sometimes, though Loid would become angry with himself... he would worry about it. He bit his lip.

"Don't feel guilty! Please...!" Oh no. He couldn't stand seeing Loid scared like this! In a panic he cradled him in his arms, trying to soothe the goosebumps. "I-I'm here. It's all right..."

The look of surprise on his face was softer as he was pulled into his arms, whatever doubts he had leaving his thoughts quite instantly. Instead he felt anxious and incredibly embarrassed. "N--Nin..t.." Crap, it was suddenly hard to speak.

Ninten sighed, resting his head on Loid's shoulder.

"I'm not leaving. So don't worry. I'm not gonna go away." An air of peace settled upon him, like he was to fall asleep holding his friend...

Eyes narrowing, Loid choked softly, overwhelmed. Tears formed at the corners of his eyes and his breath hitched. He broke into quiet sobs, holding his hands to his chest. He really was a weakling..

"Aw Loid..." Ninten started humming Queen Mary's lullaby, the first song that came to mind both of them knew. Nuzzling gently over his jacket, his arms held tighter, gathering as much warmth to Loid as if they were knelt in the streets of a cold winter night.

Loid continued to cry for a while, saying nothing and barely making a sound. He'd moved a little closer, thankful that Ninten had already handled most of that; it was hard to bring himself to do something so bold, at least, for him. Slowly he quieted, the song giving as much warmth as the embrace. He smiled, unsteadily humming a few of the notes himself, off-key and emotional.

Slowly Ninten drawn away, but soft enough so not to scare Loid, and let his arms remain holding his shirt. He hums with Loid, brushing his thumb over freckled cheek to wipe away tears. Puffy and wet his face was, Loid wasn't looking his best now. But the color of his eyes stayed, Ninten's voice fading to a whisper as he reached out and cleaned Loid's glasses, peering into those eyes...

Loid stopped humming when Ninten moved, his eyes rising to look at him. A little scared, he always was, but it was obvious that Ninten's actions had comforted him. He gasps gently at the touch, eyes shaking as his heart flutters; it makes him feel guilty, yet.. Ninten was holding him like this. Did he have to feel guilty? Would.. he be able to understand what Loid barely could manage to admit to himself, nevermind Ninten? He winces slightly at the hand obscuring his vision, and then nervously giggles in a whisper as Ninten only succeeds in smudging his glasses more.

Ninten returns the glasses to Loid's face, oblivious that he left runaway fingerprints on them. A chill runs down his back; something wet falls on his shoulder, but it wasn't hot like his friend's tears. One by one, chilly drops sunk into Ninten's shirt, and the boy was desperate for comfort...! He quickly seized Loid's lips with his own, a tingle rippling up his spine.

Loid blinks as a droplet hits his nose, briefly glancing to the sky as it starts to rain, the drops oddly cool on his over-heated skin. He doesn't expect the kiss at all, nor does he have a moment to react before Ninten's lips press against his—? The fingers held to his chest tense, his whole body burning hotly. A little delayed, his eyes widen, unmoving in shock. His lip quivers gently, his breath caught in his throat. Ninten—He..

His fingers tremble over Loid's shoulders, and the rain beat harder and harder. Ninten didn't move, focusing on nothing but those lips and a sweet sensation, a unique taste mingling in his mouth with a soft press...

Loid didn't feel the rain as it grew thicker, his heart pounding in his throat. It was all he could do to give in, though it petrified him to—Ninten would know. He'd know everything! But.. his lips moved nonetheless, soft and hesitant as they pressed back, shaking.

His hands grew bolder, reaching around Loid in embrace. He pauses for breath, the rain hissing down his neck. Ninten returns the kiss, pressing a little deeper... he didn't want to go too far to frighten Loid. The tip of his tongue trailed his friend's lips, nestling Loid close to his chest.

His hands fell at the embrace, unsurely wrapping around the back of Ninten's shoulders, barely gripping at all. Despite his gentleness, Loid startles, squeezing Ninten's shoulders. "N-ah—!" His stomach twists uncomfortably from the sensation and his back gently arches, though pressed against Ninten, he feels safe.

He draws apart, breathing heavily... his eyes widen suddenly, seeing the patches of soggy papers in the rain. "O-Oh no!" Ninten lets go, arms flailing as he tries to salvage his friend's work, maps tearing into wet wads in his hands.

Loid blinked, watching with an almost blank expression, feeling strangely empty as Ninten left his side. It was dark—when did it get so dark?—scraps of soaked loose-leaf strewn along the ground, crumpling uselessly in Ninten's fingers. Reaching out, Loid took hold of his arm, looking at him with soft eyes. He didn't care about the papers.

"Oh god—I-I'm sorry—!" With a helpless gaze, Ninten turns to Loid, paralyzed at his expression. Now HE wanted to cry... his cap provided no protection for his hair, sopping wet and making him cold. They had to get inside. Or some place... "Loid..."

Loid blinked, unmoving for a moment before he clumsily stood, lifting his hand from Ninten's arm. Bending down, he gathered his thankfully water-proof bag, making sure that it was closed before starting to walk. ".. C-come on." His moving seemed a little frantic, obviously still in shock over what had happened.

"R-Right...!" He still wanted to save Loid's papers, but he followed his friend anyway, shielding his face from the rain.
